Train Going Opposite Direction

Irene asks:

“I have an HO lifelike steam engine with tender car 0-4-0. It wants to run in the opposite direction than what I have the resistor on, in other words, it runs backward on forwards and vice versa. What can I do as it can get confusing at times?”

Assuming you are DC not DCC, you can reverse the connections to the track. Either at the controller or the track.

If you are using DC and it is the only loco you have, you can do what Geoff said and reverse the connection to the track. If you have other locos that behave themselves, you could open the loco and reverse the connections to the motor.

If you are using DCC, you could check the user manual and see if it lets you edit the CV setting(s) to reverse the default direction.

If you’re running DCC change CV29 to a value of 3. That will reverse the way it runs. If DC just change your power in wires.

For Dc, if you want your locomotive to go in the same direction as your other DC loco’s but it don’t, you will need to reverse the wires at the motor. If this is a Dcc loco, it will be a matter of programming the loco’s direction parameters. I use JMRI’s Decoder Pro to program any on my locomotives. It’s is free to download, and it covers just about every decoder that is out there. Many systems allow you to program right from your controller, I have the NCE Power Cab system, and can program loc’s right from the controller. If you want to “consist” several locomotives, you should be able to select each loco’s direction in the consist on your controller.
