Lighting Scale Buildings

Rogers asks others in the hobby:

“I would like to know the best kind of light inside old pre-1900 style HO buildings to simulate lamplight. Would yellow be the best?”

Just use LED-s, there are very wide variety of these. Just pick the colour or effect you like. Dont forget to Rectifier for LED lamps. Otherweise LED might burn out. There are many videos in Youtube to help you.

Thanks. I’ve got a lot more to do before I begin the lighting, I’ll check out Youtube.

As Bob said – yellow led’s, but with a bit more resistance than usual, to dim them down a little more, thus suggesting tired gas lamps in dirty shades or diffusers. If you can arrange a flicker circuit, that would be even better, because they did fluctuate in brightness as the gas pressure varied, or draughts hit them.

I’m really new at this, started as a hobby after my retirement. Thanks for the help I’ll have to get some books learn some of the electrical nuances. However this project turns out, I’m sure having fun.

I use soft white Leds on a lower voltage run through a tranststor flip flop circuit this way one circuit can do two buildings I added vairable resistors to the circuit to speed up or slow down the oscilation to a level that represents the flicker of a flame from an old oil lamp. Now for something a bit more modern use a self flashing blue led painted silver on top and three sides and placed in the corner of a house to represent a TV set. it looks more like an old black and white set with the flashing light coming through a window. Make sure your house has a TV aerial on the roof to look more authentic.
