Using Non-Macklin Equipment on Noch Layout?

David models HO and writes:

“I am looking to buy a used Noch layout from 1972. Can I run standard HO scale equipment which is not Marklin on this layout, and will the Marklin transformers power them? Thanks.”

My understanding of the Marklin system is that is similar to a three rail system in that there is a centre stud in the track, and the locomotive circuit goes from the wheels to the engine and back to the stud. So “standard HO” equipment isn’t going to work.

And I think that Marklin ran on AC, so the controllers wouldn’t work for standard HO either.

European model trains run on ac power, so US standard model trains will not run on them.
I do however understand that sometime very recently they have converted to DC but only in maybe the last 10 yrs.
