Track Layout For Four Locomotives

Larry is operating DCC and wants to run four locomotives. Here is his question for you.
“I’m still in the planning stage of my HO layout. I have several books on track planning, but all are geared toward two locomotive layouts. I know DCC allows more than one locomotive on the same track, but this requires an engineer. Are there any track plans for four locomotives, that allows you to set set four different trains in motion and just sit back and observe them? I have room for a 12’x16′ layout, and I will be using DCC.”

One Response to Track Layout For Four Locomotives

  • Randall says:

You could certainly design your own layout. There are many great books on the subject, but my favorite is “Track Planning for Realistic Operation” by John Armstrong. You can create concentric loops that are interconnected through double crossovers or networks of turnouts. Such a layout doesn’t have to be boring, as loops can actually use grades and bridges to cross over one another. But to get four working independent loops in a 12′ x 16′ I think your chances of success are better in N scale.
