Locomotive Motors

If you have experience with locomotive motors then you might be willing to assist Tom with his question:

“I am new to model railroading and I am looking at various locos. What puzzles me is there are different types of motors used. Can anyone shed some light on this question and explain the differences?”

The various motors are generally selected for cost, the low cost locomotives (standard Bachmann series, for instance) will have low cost 3 pole can motors while the high-end locomotives will have 5 or more poles, rare earth magnets, or coreless motors. The cheaper motors have the advantage of being tougher, but the more expensive motors run smoother and generally have more power for their size.
