Height Of Benchwork – Baseboard – Platform
Buzz has a question that has been asked before on this blog (use search box to see previous postings on the subject). Readers are welcome to give their thoughts on the most appropriate height:
“Can some please inform me what is the finished height from the floor to the platform for ho scale. I am now in the process of putting the legs on my frame.”

Layout bench height is such a subjective issue. Many modelers put the finished benchwork at 40″ to 54″ from the floor. It depends on the modeler’s height for a comfortable working height.
I would suggest that your height should be somewhere between your waist and elbow height from the floor.
Most suggest that the higher the layout, the better the sight lines for watching models. You have to consider a comfortable reach while working on the layout. Layout width should also be considered. I can reach about 30″ to work on scenery and track.
I’m in the U.K & belong to a model railway club we work to 40 inches from floor to track level on the main scenic part which is flat so that kids can see as we attend lots of exhibitions smaller children we provide a small stool for them to stand on (no STEPS) AS YOU GET THE LONG , SHORT and the tall.
