How to Make Scenery Look Realistic

Jake is new to the hobby and wants some ideas from anyone willing to share their experience on building houses in a town scene. Jake asks:

“Hello, can someone please help me…I have just started my first HO layout and I don’t know how to get started? What is the best way to make houses?”

To set Jake on the right track (excuse the pun), please add your comments.

The easiest way is to buy the houses in kits or pre-built through your local hobby shop (or online train dealer). There are several manufacturers that make structures like these.
Another option that you might explore is to do a web search for cardstock structures that you can print out and build.
If you must be a glutton for punishment you can get plastic siding, roofing material, doors and windows in your chosen scale, a scale ruler, and a good exacto knife and set of blades. You can then build as many houses as you need in whatever style you want.
