HO Engine Derailment

Joe has a question for those who have been in the hobby for a while.

“Does anyone make an attachment for a six axle engine that will keep the wheels on the rail after hitting a high spot are a turnout? I was thinking maybe someone would make a derailler that fits under the carriage and guide the truck? Thank you for your help.”

    Hi Joe,
The problem with most commercially branded turnout is that they are not “tuned”. What you need to do is check each turnout with an MMRA Standards Guage, & also check that the loco’s wheels are in correct guage. Make any necessay adjustments. I find that by carefully filing the tapered trailing ends of the turnout so that they neatly meld with the track can help solve some of these problems. You may find, depending on your brand of turnout, that after checking with the NMRA guage, the turnout flanges are too gappy – glue a fine styrene strip to the inside of each turnout flange. This will guide the loco wheels away from the frog cetre-line & correctly thru’ the side of the frog. Most probably this has been one of the main causes for your derailments.
    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Ian
