N Gauge Mountain Branch Line

Gordo gives readers a progress report on his planned N gauge layout:

“I’m still working out what I want. My current thinking is towards a harbour/mountain branch line. Everything that the locals need is brought by coastal vessel and moved to the top of a 1000 foot cliff with a dedicated railway to take care of the transport needs. Does anyone have any ideas?”

  • Dan says:

Consider at least partly a switchback or zig-zag rail line like the Cuzco-Macchu Picchu line in Peru or the one in the Blue Mountains of Australia, in order to gain altitude without excessive layout length.

  • Always keep in mind that “N” scale hates steep grades worse than any other scale…

You could also consider one of the Indian mountain railways. There is a TV series of various Indian railways to give you ideas, but whatever the layout, the problem will be the availability of authentic engines and rolling stock of the period in the scale you want.
