Engine Operation – Clean and Lubricate
A reader asks others for advice:
“I have been out of the hobby for many years. I have unpacked several boxes of HO locomotive engines and track and set up some for the kids. The engines are all sluggish and work intermittently. I realize they are most likely dusty and dry. How do I get them performing like they did previously? How do you clean and lubricate old equipment like these engines?”

Hi, I have done the same thing and while I have been able to get some going, most of the Lima’s (20 to 40 years old) are just too underpowered and have shown themselves not to be worth repairing. The Roco’s all are going nicely.
Hi. I’ve had the same problem. None of mine had run for some 23+ years. I used ‘Eazi’ Track Cleaning Fluid from Finishing Touches, (UK 07984-678395 or 0116-2785134), who I met at the Alexandra Palace Rail Show recently. Using Eazi to totally clean the packed gung, then used a light watch oil. Worked like a dream. The fluid is mainly pure/medical alcohol. Hope this helps. BobT
