The best and easiest way to match a loco to a decoder is to call or e-mail the manufacturer of the decoder. Almost any Mfgr will do… Digitrax, Tsunami, etc. I have found them all to be very helpful. Just tell them about your loco and they will tell you which decoder to use. FYI, on small HO loco’s, ‘N’ scale decoders will also work. The key is the current draw.
If the DCC decoder supports both DC and DCC options, then a DCC equipped locomotive will run on a DC layout and the reverse is also true. Be sure and follow the directions that come with your Loco and/or your decoder.
