How to Fix Problem with Loco Running Over Points

Stuart

“I have a problem with several older 00 (4mm) locos running on DCC over points where they sometimes stall. I understand that there are ‘stay alive capacitors’ available to overcome this problem. My question is:- do these work and if so how are they connected in relationship with the decoder? Look forward to any members ideas/experience. Many thanks.”

Do the locos just stall, or do they short out your layout? Check wheel back to back measurements with an NRMA gauge first. If that’s ok, then check the points – clearances, wiring, crossing (frog) for power continuity. If you are using insulated crossings (frogs) rather than elctrofrogs you will continue to have this problem unless your locos have long wheel bases with every possible wheel picking up power. I don’t think built in capacitors on your locos is the answer, but then again, I’ve been wrong before

The capacitor will work, I use it myself, the only issue with the capacitor option in DCC is that your engine may have power (for a second or two) without your control of the engine. The capacitor supplies power to the motor, not to the DCC controller. Purchase the correct capacitor for your sized engine motor.
