How To Make Gutters
Roger asks readers:
“I am building some houses from scratch and was wondering, what is a good material for making gutters? I have tried hard paper but I could not make it look real. I am constructing the building from 1/16th wood. I tried finding something on the internet but all I get are ads for real gutters. Does anyone have a suggestion?”

Just returned to “OO & N”,gauge modelling, after long pause, you do not say what scale you are working in,lots on internet ??!!,ready made plastic, very realistic !!
I am sorry I forgot to mention that an building in HO scale.
Gutters are 5 to 6 inches in width and height………in HO scale, 1/16 of an inch is approx. 5 inches………..you can buy 1/16 ” bamboo sticks in almost any art supply store and in some hardware stores like Ace……paint them with flat gray, silver, or white paint and make a small indention in the top with thin metal ruler…just a thought
That sound like a good idea! Thanks
How about bisecting plastic straws?
TRY SMALL STRAWS LIKE USED IN BARS FOR MIXED DRINKS. THEY COME ROUND, SQUARE, AND RECTANGULAR. CUT OPEN FOR GUTTERS, UNCUT FOR DOWNSPOUTS.
I tried the plastic straws but I could not cut them straight because my hands shake to much.
I thank for the thought!
Roger, My Wife uses a very fine paper cutter for pictures in her scrapbooking. The cutter hold paper sheets and the knife slides on a guide. How about a little jig maybe of paper to hold the straw and glide the sliding knife through it. The knife is guided on a straight line. I will try it and let you know Newman
Again no scale is mentioned,I am sure they have umbrellas (or whatever they call them in the US) try taking one of the main ribs or supports from a broken unit, all the ones I have found so far have a similar profile to a 6″ deep gutter. Also the membrane makes a good waterproof imitation canvas.
When I purchase items in hard plastic bubble wrap I cut the rims off and they make guttering, paint the inside and the out side has a gloss finish, happy modelling jim
i use a kit from wills ratio ( Peco) it has gutters down pipes etc the also do doors and various windows
