How Do DCC Decoders Compare?
Roger asks readers:
“Greetings from the Adelaide Hills. South Australia. My club uses the NCE control units. Is it possible for someone to give us a round down on the different DCC Decoders. I know you get what you pay for, however we live in a real world and that means budget restrains.”

Hello Roger and all
I use NCE Power cab and Pro cab systems.
I buy repair and sell good used engines as well as new, I repair and install DCC LEDs etc in my own and for others I have used a lot of decoders but what made me decide on Train Control Systems,,,, actually a few reasons are
#1 all of the steam sounds are in one decoder,,, all Diesel prime movers are in the Diesel decoders all of the prototype bells whistles and horns for the type engine. you don’t have to program your sounds or buy a different decoder for each type engine you own.
#2 all of the sounds are recorded from an actual prototype with true 16 bit CD quality recording and playback.
#3 All of the features that make your models realistic, like,,, Your locomotive will automatically chuff loudly when it is pulling a heavy load or going uphill and then coast downhill. Adjustable rod clank and snifter valve sounds add to the fun. Since no two model locomotives are the same, this Load Based chuff volume can easily be calibrated to your individual locomotive using our exclusive Audio Assist. Like the WOWSound Diesel decoders, you can also manually adjust the chuff volume up or down at any time with the press of a button. With the diesel the dynamic brake slowes your train down in steps, each press of the button the prime mover responds and the engine slows down while the dyno increases then when it drops off of the grade you cut off the dyno and the train comes back up to the preset speed. their many more features that makes your train seam like the real thing.
#4 the audio assist can nearly turn a newb into a pro in just minutes setting CVs and you that are Pro’s can adjust the CVs as in other decoders also. a first timer can easily set the major cv’s by reading the directions and following the audio assist’s lead.
#5 TCS decoders have an awesome motor control and adjust-ability
#6 TCS have a mother board with resistors for LED’s and their KA3 keepalive’s built in which is like a battery backup to keep loss of track power over dirty and contact problems from stalling your engine or resetting your sound etc. for most popular engines and are still working on others.
#7 The Steam and Diesel decoders both can be purchased in 5 different ways, The first 4 are the WOW Sound 1 a hard wire decoder with a 9 pin plug,,, 2 the same decoder with a KA3 keepalive,,, 3 A 21 pin decoder,,, 4 is a 21 pin in a mother board kit specially for your engine type.,, and for those of you that are not into sound, 5 the motor and light function decoder without sound
#8 TCS has A1 considerate help and tech support for your convenience.
#9 their website is very easy to navigate and find what you are looking for. a lot of DCC install videos function videos and other valuable information on DCC that you don’t see at other sites
Their are other reasons why TCS is #1 to me but I think the biggest reason I like TCS decoders is
#10 All TCS ELECTRONICS are covered by a one year, GOOF PROOF, NO QUESTIONS ASKED warranty covered by the manufacture, made at the TCS factory right here in the USA. if the decoder fails in any way you just go to the web site and fill out the warranty print off the shipping label and packing sheet mail it off and a replacement will be sent in its place. even if you accidentally fry it installing.
# eleven {read this until you get the picture} TCS decoders are so quality made that you don’t have to register your item until you send it in for repair and you don’t even have to show your sales receipt!!!!!
I challenge you to find that warranty or even close to it by any other company
You can get decoders that are cheaper you can get some that claim to be the best, you can get some that are great decoders. but I have been an authorized dealer for TCS for over two years now and I cant find any that can top the 8 reasons I chose TCS over Digatraxx NCE Soundtrax MDC and all of the others.
Hello Roger, I’m in Tassie so I mail order everything. I got onto a site called Ali Express that sells no name type decoders for about $17 US. You pay for what you get so I was dubious but I bought the 6 pin type for my N scale DCC ready locos & the ones with leads for the locos I convert (about 12 completed so far). I run the same DCC control as you and I’ve found these decoders just fine. Many will say you get what you pay for which I agree but they have got all my trains running without breaking the bank.
Cheers, Barrie
