DC to DCC Wiring Harness

Robert P asks:

“Digitrax offered a wiring harness, DH123AT to convert HO DC locomotives to DCC.  It has been discontinued. Does another manufacturer offer a similar product?”

Hi Robert,
.The harness of the DH123AT is for the Athearn open frame motors only. You can solder the gray and orange cables of your decoder to the existing motor contacts and replace the commercial harness.
I hope you understand my poor english.

There should be a harness that will plug in your chip to. It may not be for that chip it might have a few more wires for extra things but the harness and plug for the chip should be the same. except for the extra wires for extra things But a 123 should fit a 164 chip harness. It is all in the other wires that come with the harness plug. from Newman

Hello Robert and all
It all depends on the engine you are converting as to what it takes. some of the older engines from the 80s back are not set up for DCC at all,,,, the motor has to be isolated the trucks rewired to the decoder etc.
some are dc but are DCC ready, all you should have to do is install the decoder, but even so,,,, their are a few other things that may have to be done to install it correctly. and their are a lot of decoders that you have to pick from to fit the engine you have.
Their is a lot to know if you are intending to install a decoder if you don’t know what you are doing you will need to do some homework first, “one nano sec of electricity to the wrong spot will fry a $100 decoder!!!
