Planning a Small HO layout – Help!

Delford sent in this question to readers:

“I am trying to plan a layout and was planning to start with a 4×8. I would like a few tracks and a tunnel and bridge and some turn outs. I have a NCE controller so want to go DCC. Would anyone give me some ideas? I know there are many experts out there.”

Delford… the same advice I’d give to anyone in the hobby, is to learn as much as you can… and never stop learning. There are plenty of excellent resources available including several featured on this blog including the Beginners Blueprint and this one on DCC http://www.dccmodeltrains.org.

    Delford,
I second the comment below your question. If it is the track plan to fit your 4×8 surface you are looking for there are lots of plans out there for that size table. A quick search of the internet will get you plenty of options.
If you want to try designing your own, a freeware program to help you is “SCARM” (Simple Computer Aided Railroad Modeller). It has different makes of tracks pre-loaded and is quite easy to master. Just do a search for “scarm train software”. You plan in 2 dimensions and you can view in 3D your plan to get an idea if it was you want.
    Have fun.

    Bill
