Mixing India Ink With Isopropyl Alcohol For Weathering
Koot posted this question:
“The India ink I use for a wash with Isopropyl alcohol separates and black sediment settles at the bottom of the container. On the label it says that the ink can be diluted with distilled water. Why the separation?”

Depends on what is in it. India ink is basically a very fine carbon powder colloidal suspension in a medium sometimes water with additives. Adding alcohol reduces the ability of the water to keep the particles of carbon suspended and so will settle out.
Try mixing it two teaspoons India ink to one quart of distilled water then add a teaspoon of isopropyl alcohol to break the surface tension and allow it to flow better. You could also try Photo Flow in place of the alcohol, if you can find it.
be sure that it is india ink, that is, carbon black and water. Some so called india ink are carbon black in an acrylic carrier. Not the same.Works differently.
