Insulated Turnouts

Mike sent in this question:

“What is the difference and advantages of insulated vs uninsulated turnouts for DCC?”

One Response to Insulated Turnouts

  • Dale says:

The most common issue with non-insulated turnouts is having to isolate the frog and power it separately depending on which way the points are thrown. This is because the train wheels will cause a short as they cross a non-isolated frog. A turnout with an insulated frog avoids this problem.

On the other hand, insulated turnouts can sometimes cause stalling problems with short-wheelbase locos or older locos that have only one power pick-up truck as the frog does not have any power.

As for DCC, the type of turnout is not relevant – either will be fine.
