Recommended Manufacturer For HO Diesel Locomotives

Gavin writes:

“I’ve been searching online for a diesel loco (with sound installed), but now I’m confused with the various options. I want something that is mid-price range, reliable, and with good detailing. Are there any brands I should avoid? I appreciate everyone will have their own likes and dislikes, but some feedback based on personal experiences would be great. Thanks in advance.”

Gavin good night. Try to look for Bachmann diesel locomotives in trainworld.com. I have bought many diesel model with dcc & sound in 100 U$S price and are very detailed and works fine ….. Of course there are greater prices than 100 dollars but look for it and certainly will discover this locos …

    Gavin,
Bachmann at the lower end for detail. Athearn Genesis, BLI, Rapido are higher end but great detail. Walthers is more in the middle. Don’t get too hung up on detail. At 3 feet away and moving you can’t count the bolt heads. Judicious weathering is what is needed to make a model emulate the real thing.

Kato and Atlas make the best runners, I avoid Bachman and BLI, while their detail is quite a bit better, they don’t run well.

There are many reviews which give you an opportunity to hear the sounds and see them run. Also if you are not tied to a certain road name there are deals at Trainworld ,modeltrainstuff, the Yankee-Dabbler and Hobbylandlinc just to name a few on even higher end brands Just to add to brands already mentioned Intermountain and Scaletrains operator line can be good values
