Golf Course on Train Layout

Harvey models in HO scale and asks readers:

“I have just got to have a golf course in my train set up. How much space would I need to set up a nine hole course, approximate 3000 yards?”

If you reduced your golf course to scale, it would still require 34 1/2 linear yards! You could do it by using selective compression. Think about doing a couple holes on the layout and incorporating several more into the backdrop. Exaggerate the visual distance by making the backdrop painting get smaller as it appears to go back.
If you were to make your course about 40 inches from tee to green on the layout you could get a pretty nice looking course.

Hi Harvey, I sure hope you have a LOT of room. HO is (1 : 87) scale. If I am doing the math right, 3000 yrds divided by 87 = 34.5 actual yards on your HO layout. Now if you want to down size this quite a bit, place it on the far side or back side of your layout and make it much smaller so it gives the appearance of being a golf course in the distance. This way you get what you want, at the same time you save a lot of space. Or dare I say it, build a miniature golf course. That will be a real conversation piece for all. I have seen this on displays and it really gives a nice touch. Have fun. Tony P
