A lot of modelers use a product called Homasote. It is a composite material. I don’t like it because of the dust it creates when being cut. Here is a link to an interesting blog from a Homasote user: http://www.buildingmodeltrains.com/benchwork-construction-part-5-plywood-and-homasote-roadbed/

Melvin,

Depending on your scale, some manufacturers offer foam roadbed which, I think, is less messy than cork.

For larger scales (like S or O gauge), some people make their own roadbed by using something called Homesote. It is a relatively inexpensive product that is made out of paper (recycled newsprint, I believe). It can be cut with a sharp knive or a saber saw and comes in 4 x 8 foot sheets. You’ll find it at any building supply store.

Hope this helps,

Geof
