Spares for Bachmann and Lifelike Engines

Gil asks readers:

“Where in the wonderful world of model trains can I find spare parts for Bachmann and Lifelike engines. I have two good engines but the Nylon Wheels that mesh with the worm gear and work are worn and won’t drive the wheels – Help!!”

Try the Bachmann website: bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/index.php. They have a parts section that may help.

You can get parts from bachman or lifelike by contacting the company. If you need the part numbers and and dont have the original parts list thag came with the engine you can find the parts list on line.I have had very good luck with both companys.

If they’re Proto 2k., A-line makes replacement gears. Since many Proto diesels are duplicates of Athearn drives, those gears may fit some locos. Check with Walthers for regular Life-like patrs.

For life Like, contact Walthers. If you have a part number, so much the better.

I had a problem with a bachmann loco with a broken (nylon) axle joiner. Nobody I spoke to had any knowlege of spare parts.
On Ebay I stumbled across a supplier in UK called petersspares(Look it up on Google! )who sell a range of bits. I managed to buy a pack of joiners, with the centre one complete with drive gear. It wasn’t cheap, but it did mean I could salvage a perfectly good loco.
Hope this helps.

I currently have a problem with a 3 truck climax but being in South Africa makes getting spare gears quite a problem.

Walthers supply spares for LifeLike and if you are the original registered owner of the loco they replace for free. Athearn axle gears and wheels also fit some LifeLike diesel locos. Walthers took over the LifeLike line during 2002 ? Bachmann (europe and usa) is very good on gear spares for their British and American lines.

No more Bachmann or life like – have both and cannot obtain small plastic gear wheel that meshes with worm gears – the only offer was a new complete chassis at the same price that I paid for the units.

Thank u all for your kind assistance.

Spares – EBay is a great source.

Someone is selling an used engine or a box full of broken ones.

I see people buying these old locomotives and taking them apart for parts and/or trading them with other people.

Bachmann on June 1st was taking email requests for FREE REPLACEMENT GEARS for On30 Shay, Climax, Railbus, Railtruck, and a few others. It was for limited time and first come first served so don’t know if they will still do it but it wouldn’t hurt to inquire. My gears arrived today and I am very pleased.

If the teeth on the gear are OK, but the center is cracked so it doesn’t grab the axle securely, it’s possible to put a small metal tube over the stub on the gear to hold it. Brass or aluminum tube from the hobby shop, with an inside diameter same as or smaller than the gear stub will work. If it’s smaller, use a drill bit of the right diameter to clean out the tube to just slide over the stub.

Of course, if the teeth are shot, you need a new one……
