Finding Logging Locos (Shays)

Bryan asks readers:

“I finally have the time to enter the hobby, and really want to do something in the logging industry. I’ve been dreaming for years, but not watching prices! Where in the world does one find HO Shay’s these days for less than $1200?!!

I’d really like to join in on the hobby, but seriously, how in the world can you get started at those prices? Also, it seems that availability (why prices are so high?) is really limited. Any direction/advice is really appreciated.”

I keep checking eBay for all my model railroad needs and wants. I have been very active with eBay getting good deals on older – out of production – kits and rolling stock. Prices fluctuate quite a bit, depending on rarity, condition, seller and other bidders. Do a lot of research and watch.

One US company that produces Shays is Bachmann trains. These locomotives are generally less than $300.00, and often can be found on sale for much less. Check micromark.com and trainworld.com They generally have the best prices. You can also find a Shay on ebay. The ones on ebay are generally brass and more expensive.

Bachmann has stopped producing the Shay though they are still producing the Climax. It would fit in a logging scene. If you really want a Shay you will have to keep an eye on ebay. The 2 truck Climax can be had with DCC and sound ready for under $250.

I have seen them on used tables at smaller train shows and usually a manageable price You may go to several shows before you see any and after all your searching you might find one at a show you previously attended. Just got to be patient and get to the shows. Your smaller shows will have lots of used stuff still in fine shape. from Newman

I have some shays (2), and 2 heislers, each by Bachman. I find them problematic at best. I really like the Mantua brand. They are not as “refined” as Bachman, but I think they are all around more reliable. My wish is that they, somebody-besides Bachman, would produce a Climax. I love the diagonal gear drive on the Climax. I have several older and the newer of the Mantua 2-6-6-2’s, and camel backs, mother Hubbard’s not to mention the Pacific’s and others from back in the day. They are my favorites. But what can I say? I drive a 1978 Chevy Suburban 3/4 ton and a 1971 Monte Carlo.
Drew, I hope you find out what you need/want, just throwin’ my 2 cents.
