Creating a Peat Bog Landscape for a Layout

Ed models HO and asks:

“Have peat loco. I want to landscape an area of my layout to a peat bog. Does anyone have any ideas to achieve this scenic look?”

I don’t have any knowledge about peat bogs other than some pictures or movie clips seen years ago. I would do an internet search for pictures to use as examples to model.

BE careful on eBay i am new to it and i am a Lionel guy check out the prices before you buy I
seen people pay more than what the equipment is worth it is easy to get caught up in the actions and
also check the shipping sometimes it cost more for the than the piece is worth.

This is a very interesting project. How would I do it. Firstly this could get messy so I would cut a piece of 1/2″ foam bigger than the intended bog. Dish 1/3 of this to create a hollow for the “swamp” and decorate it in the same manner as described in a number of magazine articles with slimy “water, reeds and rushes. Have one edge straight – this is the working edge of the peat harvesting operation. Detail this edge by marking it to show the spade widths/depths, and on the bank stack up the “spits” of wet peat. The peat, in real life, is left to drain, and then collected for further drying out and transhipment to retailers/wholesalers. Because we are operating in a bog lorries (trucks) might get stuck in the mud, lightweight tram lines (similar to those used in France at the Somme and other places) could be laid along the working edge If in HO, use TT or N scale track. If I didn’t live in the driest inhabited state on the driest inhabited continent I’d have a crack at this one. I recollect one of the British MR magazines might have done a similar project.

Re the peat bog project, I forgot to say that once the project is complete then cut the relevant section out of the layout and insert the bog diorama into it and blend it in. Sorry about that.
