Post War Lionel Wiring

Dick asks:

“Do I need a bus wire and feeder wires for an older model O gauge layout? I’m not planning anything eloquent or elaborate, maybe a crossing and a couple o’turn out switches.”

Bus and feeder wires are typically for DCC layouts to ensure full voltage everywhere on the layout. For DC, you can often get by with just one power connection to the track. Your proposed layout doesn’t sound very big, so as long as the connections between the track pieces are nice and tight you should be ok with just one connection.

Whether or not you need to run a bus wire and feeders depends mostly on the size of the layout and the configuration. A loop type layout usually needs fewer power feed points than a point-to-point layout. (That’s why most time a point-to-point layout should have the main power feed at the center as it makes for a shorter run to the ends.)

Ultimately the decision will be made by how well the layout runs. If it seems okay, fine. If not, you may need the bus wire and feeders.
