Power Supply for Atlas Snap Relays and Turnouts

Jim asks:

“I am rewiring my HO layout and I have a switch to allow DC OR DCC running. I want to use separate power supplies to track LED signals and also for Atlas switch machines. I am having trouble figuring out what specs my power supplies (eg old phone chargers) should be. What voltage, current, and wattage? Thanks for any suggestions.”

    Solenoid type switch machines like atlas require a substantial inrush current particularly when your actuating 2 or more at the same time. . It is best to use a capacitance discharge power supply. They can be purchased and/or built. there is plenty of internet information on them.

    Hi Jim:

    Just read your inquire about separate power supplies. I took a old computer power supply from a Dell computer and bundled together the colored wires. This gave me the voltage needed for signaling and lights. I have listed below the combinations used. Doesn’t matter if you combine three reds together, you still only get 5v. Hope this helps you or anyone else.

    Green & Black turns on P/C
    Black = Ground
    Red = 5 V
    Yellow = 12 V
    Orange = 3.3 V
    Blue = -12 V
    Red & Blue = 17 V
    Blue & Yellow = 14 V
