Paul,
If you have access to a wood lot or an area with trees find some branches of the desired size and cut logs to the length you require. I have used this approach for tree stems, sawmill logs and log loads. A little time consuming but inexpensive.

Yup, all free ! Collect whatever twigs you can get your hands on, select whatever looks best. A craft knife or fine modeller’s saw for neat ends, to give the effect of being chopped or sawn down.

You will also find many twigs that are good for making free trees !
