DCC Controllers

Steve asks:

“I am currently running an MRC handheld controller on a small layout (10 x 10) in HO scale. I am moving my layout to another part of the basement and am going to expand it about three-time bigger. I was offered another MRC setup and was wondering if I can use this system as a separate running system, or should I if possible just use the handheld controller?”

One Response to DCC Controllers

  • Geoff says:

Can you be more specific about the model of the MRC you have and are getting? Generally, unless you want two separate layouts, you would have one main system, your “command station”, but you can have more than one handheld controller plugged into the system.

Since you are expanding your layout, you need to consider the power output and wiring. With longer runs, you need thicker wires for the main bus. You don’t necessarily need more power from your system unless you are going to be running more locomotives at the same time. Just having a bigger layout doesn’t mean more locomotives running at once. There’s a limit to how much multi-tasking anyone can do! But if you do intend to have more running, then you may need to increase the power.
