    This is a north american way of indicating the sharpness of a turnout, and so is also used by hobbyists. A number 4 turnout for example is one where the tracks diverge 1 foot for every 4 feet forward, similarly for a number 6, 8 etc. (In UK model railway turnouts are classified by radius.)
