Ask five model railroaders and you’ll get seven different answers. The best way is the one that serves your needs best. Some people prefer pre-made products available from almost every retailer. Others prefer to use the same methods they use for roads and draw in the details by hand. On my layout, I used strips of thin polystyrene cut to size and etched with a hobby knife before weathering and gluing in place. As always, the best way is the one that works for you.

One method: create the road layout on your computer in outline, print it to your scale, stick it to (thin or thick) card, cut it out and paint it to suit your scene.
