Picking the Right DCC Decoder with Sound for a Conversion

Luis asks readers:

“I’m upgrading my layout from DC to DCC and want to start by converting a few engines. How do I figure out which decoder and sound setup is right for each locomotive? Any advice on matching the right parts?”

I bought ESU Loksound decoders to convert all my locomotives. I also bought an ESU Lok programmer. From the ESU website you can download for free the sounds for almost any imaginable locomotive with the correct sound for almost any engine , the correct horn and bell. You load this into the decoder. Voila, the perfect sound for that specific locomotive.
