Diesel Heritage 0-6-6-0 Locomotive Won’t Work

Miles asks readers:

“I have problem with a diesel Heritage 0-6-6-0 locomotive. It has all-wheel drive and is HO scale, and is driven at the center and transmitted to the wheels by 2 plastic shafts. Some friends were over here a few months ago a I think they broke it. It runs slowly, and doesn’t pick up well, even though we (my dad and I) cleaned it and the track. It can’t pull a train. What should I do with it?

  • Brent Buckley says:

Take a look at hoseeker.net/athearn.htm Search Diesel engine diagrams and find the diagram close to your chassis.

Good Luck and sorry couldn’t help any further.

  • Dennis says:

Make sure all wheels and pick ups are clean.

  • Brent Buckley says:

Goto ppw-aline.com on there website look for 12040 Electrical Hook-up Kit. This replaces the long stripe of metal across top of motor and to the pick ups above the bogies.

You don’t have to buy the kit. You can do it yourself with the right bits.

I had a problem like that and found that the motor had shorted out. It run very slow but no pull.

  • Robert Morey says:

By using a fine pointed toothpick clean out the gunge (This can cause short circuits within the motor) from the gaps in the commutator segments.
