Transformer Keeps Tripping

Rick model S scale and asks:

“I am looking for a good strong 18 VAC transformer to power a lot of accessories and lights.  My AF 30B transformer keeps tripping and I think I need more power than the 330 watts it puts out.  Is anything available?  I’m not having much luck finding a supplier on the internet, but maybe someone knows of a stockist.”

Chances are good that your circuit breaker is bad inside the transformer. This happens fairly often with old Lionel Transformers.

The 330 watts is probably more than enough for your uses!

The fix is to remove the circuit breaker and replace with an automotive type breaker of 10 amps. Any auto parts store should have them and you can simply crimp two female spade connectors that will plug onto the auto breaker or solder if you like.

Your other option is to simply bypass the internal breaker and use external breakers (either automatic or pushbutton reset) for each circuit.

Here is a diagram of your transformer. The breaker is item no 30 on the diagram. The actual part nos. is PA12A099.

Why not get a 18 vac 5 amp transformer from all electronics and just wire your lights to it and it should run some of your acc, all you need is a power cord ,fuse, toggle switch and terminal strip and make your own I have this on my layout and it works fine.
