Truck and Coupler Replacement on Passenger Cars

Robert M models N scale and asks:

“I am just starting out in model railroading and would like to change the trucks on my passenger cars to 6 wheel trucks with knuckle couplings. I am not sure what would work best and would appreciate any advice and suggestions. I have little knowledge in terms so it would have to be rather straight forward. Thanks.”

You didn’t give us enough information. Do the passenger cars currently have 6-wheel trucks? If they have 4-wheel trucks, changing them to 6-wheel style might cause clearance problems, to say nothing about not being prototypical.

As for couplers, do you want ones that mount to the trucks or ones that mount to the under-body of the car? Both have pros and cons but typically body-mount couplers look better on passenger cars (my opinion). There are a lot of good ones available; I’d check out Kadee or MicroTrains (for HO and N scale respectively).

HO or N? KD and Walthers make coupler conversion kits. Walthers also has 6 whl passenger trucks. Why do you want to change?
