MRC 1644 DCC Sound Decoders

If you have used sound decoders you might be able to answer Jeff’s question:

“I am about to equip some of my Kato N scale diesels with MRC sound decoders, starting with model 1644 in a SD70MAC. I have an old first-generation Atlas DCC throttle. Can someone with experience advise me do I need to upgrade to get the best out of the MRC 1644 decoder?”

One Response to MRC 1644 DCC Sound Decoders

I have just recently done exactly what you are doing. I had a Kato SD70mac that I put the 1644 decoder in and I am using the NCE power cab for DCC operation. It is very painless and works right out of the box. The 1644 has plenty of options you can change but it sounds really good right out of the box. The only change I made was the horn from a 4 to 7. I can’t speak to the Atlas engines as I only have the one Kato.
