Do I Need 2 Decoders For Sound & Loco Operation?
Club member Don asks readers:
“I plan to change over to DCC, and want to know for sound if I need to instal two decoders, or will the sound decoder also perform like an ordinary decoder to operate the locomotive?”

No, you do not need to buy two decoders . Just buy a specific sound decoder for the prototype engine of your locomotive and he has work for both the sound and for the engine in your model . You can also have light effects if you make the proper connections to the corresponding outputs in your decoder.
Yep J. Oscar is right on There are add on sound that can be added to some regular decoders but the best way is to get the sound Decoder and it has everything in one. If you have a regular decoder in an engine but want to update to the sound decoder just remove the older decoder and install the sound one. Don’t discard the old decoder as it can be used in an engine that you don’t want to have sound in such as one that might not have room for sound.

Mr. Newman , I would just like to add that he should buy a decoder with sound that adpte the models and manufacturer of locomotive he has since, would give less work on the adaptation and assembly, though , a non-specific decoder for manufacturer , work well in the same way .
You can get Sound Decoders with or without Engine control.
