Simple, but Clever Idea Adds Activity
Here’s a simple idea from the Loughborough Model Railway Exhibition that anyone could do at home. The timber is ready for loading onto wagons and can easily be removed from time to time to vary the scene. A crane, forklift, and workers could be included to add more activity.

I already do this on my layout. You can buy the wood to make it from most £1 shops and you get a big roll tied with wire.
I always have a Christmas theme on my Lionel layout. It’s Christmas Eve 1940. I have a PRR passenger train and another train (coal or freight, it alternates every year). I have painted some Lionel rolling stock and added PRR decals to make most the cars a Pennsy theme. My cars and trucks are all “old time”. When I had enough space I even had an airstrip with authentic period airplanes. The locomotives are black coal burners…….no diesels in my Western PA town.
You might see a Christmas tree or Holy Family in there somewhere.
Merry Christmas!
