Making Hay Bales For A Diorama Scene

I am not positive, but I thought I saw scale hay bales for sale in model railroader at one time.
I seem to recall a video tutorial that used masking tape with fine sawdust or similar which was then rolled up into a hay bale.
For rectangular ones, maybe use square dowel cut to size, coated with craft glue & coated with sawdust and/or static grass.
Boulder Creek Railroad had a tutorial on the website
I had the same requirement for a farm scene… I bought 1 or 2 very course and cheap, camel hair, paint brushes, maybe 2 inches wide, and they are also the perfect color. With scissors, cut a whole bunch of very short pieces, ( a quarter inch or smaller )… off the brush. Make small piles and drip some scenery cement over them and shape them while wet… Next morning, they had dried and could be shaped as you need them with nail clippers…Worked very nicely for me…
How about real straw or grass, sliced up finely with a razor blade, tied into bundles with thread ?

Otherwise. possibly cotton threads of a suitable colour, tied with strands of hair, or stuck together with tiny touches of thin glue.

But if you have a friend with straw-coloured hair, he may feel quite honoured to be able to make a small contribution to your layout scenery !
I made do I d bales with very short cuttings of twine. 1/8th inch of less. Spread tape out on a flat surface sticky side up and sprinkle the twine cuttings to the tape. Cologne tape sticky side out. And fasten the end with a touch of carpet glue. I have some yellow twine and green twine mixed to get a more realistic color.

Third try. Hate auto correct. Should be roll the tape with the sticky side up and fasten with a bit of ca glue.
The sticky tape and wood shavings works a treat. Small square bolser wood wood glue all sides and roll in wood shavings.
