Variable 12V DC Question – Hornby R2961 London 2012 Olympics Express 00 Gauge

Stanley models HO and writes:

“My son in the UK sent me an OO gauge Hornby 2012 train he picked up at car trunk sale which he called a “car boot sale.” I understand this model was a limited edition train released to commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games. The train itself is designed to operate on a variable 12V DC power supply. I live in the US and have a Bachmann #46605A HO transformer. My question is, will that work ok train without causing any damage?”

Hi Stanley: I also model HO gauge along with HOn3, HOn2 1/2 (HOe in the UK) all on the same layout along with a small seperate Z scale layout on my desk. I would first make sure that it does not have a DCC (Digital Command Control) decoder in it. If there is no decoder in it, it will work with OO gauge track and any 12 Volt variable transformer. I still have my ‘Hornby Zero One DCC that I used on a previous layout along with a Hornby HO gauge engine. Happy Railroading J

It will work fine on your Bachmann 12 Volt DC power supply. The only difference is that the primary side of the UK power supply is connected to 240 Volts AC and your U.S. Bachmann transformer is designed and plugs into 120 Volts AC here in the U.S. The secondary side of either transformer is 12 Volts DC after being rectified, of course.

    Stanley,
it should work with max. 12V – 15V DC without any damage.
Make sure that you use the variable voltage control contacts (DC) and do not use fixed voltage contacts (they can have 15 – 30 V DC and AC!) if any on your transformer!
Always make sure of good electrical contact – wheels and pickup cleaning and maybe commutator cleaning if you are familiar with e-motors and dismantling model trains.
    BR Stefan
