“I have 3 older Athearn diesels dating back to the ’80s and one a bit earlier. Looking at the coupler boxes I think the Kadee Whisker #148 might be my best option. Any thoughts?”

Go to kadee.com and you will find the recommended conversion for most if not all locomotives.
I e found that the whiskers work well, even if coupling with the #5 couplers
I ent to 48s from 5s because the 48s are easier to install. I don’t think one functions any better than the other.$.02 🚂
Being Athearn they are #5 pockets. The #148 whisker (medium length, center set) coupler should be an EXACT swap out as mentioned – just use a blast of Greasem or LaBelle graphite lube in the pocket as the old brass harp spring did provide some slip.
