Noisy Kato Series SD80MAC

Lewis has HO scale and asks:

“My Kato Series SD80MAC has slowed and emits a high-pitched shrieking sound. I oiled the bearings, but it made no difference. I’m not sure of the cause or how to fix it.”

Did you remove the shell? Make sure there is no foreign material in the drive gear ?
Or wrapped around an axle or drive shaft? Hi shriek usually means binding?
Can you remove gear cover? Check each axle to make sure it’s not cracked?

  • John Lightfoot says:

Sounds like motor bearing noise. Put a tad of oil on the motor bearings and that should fix it.

  • Ananda says:

    Hi,
When you say that you oiled the bearings, are you referring to the motor bearings? If not, put oil on them. All you need is a very tiny drop.

  • Sheldon Clark says:

Is the drive mechanism slipping on the axle(s)?

  • Ralph says:

Sounds like the motor bearing to me too.

  • Faizal Hathy says:

Hi, I think you should have it completely serviced where all moving parts will be looked at and that should solve the problem or disclose any parts needing replacement. To my mind a high shrieking means a problem with gears. So a service woud be best.
