Finding Figures For Railroad Scene

Ed asks readers for advice:

“I recently read – Bring your layout to life by adding people and animals. Put the people in period dress. I agree whole heartedly, but I’ve encountered a problem. I’m currently putting together a short point to point N scale 4’x8” depiction of the area outside Yankee Stadium in the early 30’s. I’ll be running a trolley and have already got the buses and cars and trucks for the scene, but trying to locate 40-50 “period dressed” people has been a challenge. Men wore suit sand hats and ladies wore dresses and hats to a ball game in the period and I’ve yet to locate anything similar. Any ideas?”

Hi Ed,
In HO I have been picking up bulk unpainted figures standing and sitting. I take the dress of the figure and paint them as needed for what I am doing. I get mine from MicroMark Catalog. But I have not seen N scale in there In my scale I can get 72 figures for under 15.00. I am sure there are bulk N scale figures. Mount their feet to a pencit eraser and use the pencel as your handle and paint as you see fit. If a had is needed then add a drop of glue and adjust from there till you like what you have then paint. I know of several N Scalers and I will be asking them where they find their figures. I have found them at train shows used and just work them from there.

Hi Ed,
Try this place. It takes a while for delivery (4-5 weeks), but they turn up in the end. They have all sorts of scales and types of figures.

For N and Z scales, try trafofuchs.de/index_en.htm
I bought about 150 people, horse drawn carriages, etc. for Breitenfurt Ost. Not only did they try to make each item unique but the were delivered within days (to UK) most of the time. In my opinion they were cheaper and better than other brands.
